As you can image, I love watching anything having to do with aliens (documentaries, I mean). I was recently watching an episode of Unsealed: Alien Files that had to do with the origin of aliens.. where they might come from. I’ve always believed that there could be other life out there. After all, it would be pretty arrogant and presumptuous to assume that, out of the billions of planets and stars out there in just the known universe, we are the only sentient life forms. Why shouldn’t there be other life, aliens if you will? But the premise of this episode was not what planet another species may come from. It put forth the idea that aliens are not another species at all. Not exactly, at least.
The idea is that the supposed alien visitations and/or abductions that have been going on for decades were not committed by a different race of beings trying to figure us out. Instead, according to the writers, WE are the aliens. You see, the theory is that human beings from the future finally managed to figure out time travel and have been coming back to “check in” with us, see how life was in their past, perhaps warn us and try to steer us in the right direction. I’m sorry to say, I don’t think they’ve done a very good job. If they had, we probably wouldn’t be on the brink of World War III. Let’s not mention the fact that time travel is theoretically impossible. Well, at least backwards time travel. Let me explain.
Not only are there numerous physics problems to account for, like the lack of strong enough gravitational fields to support “warp speed,” but you also run into a little issue called the Grandfather Paradox. Simply put, this theory deals with the possible consequences of time travel, like altering the time line to the point that drastic things happen in the future. The main position goes like this: If you were to go back in time, and accidentally do something that results in the death of your grandfather, you would never have been born. Therefore, it would be impossible for you to have gone back in time, and further impossible to have killed your grandfather. So.. you didn’t go back in time, and didn’t kill your grandfather, so you WERE born, and can now go back in time. See the problem?
That being said, if there is anything to this theory, how do we know that future humans don’t actually figure it out? Maybe they’ve found a way to circumvent this potential disaster. But I digress.
According to evolutionary theory, life forms evolve over time to be able to adapt to their environment. Fish developed gills to be able to pull oxygen from water. Apes evolved opposable thumbs to be able to grasp food and crude tools. So, too, humans are constantly in a state of evolution, according to science. If you think about our environment, it’s a bit harsh, and getting worse every day. Eventually our atmosphere will be so thin, because of all of our global warming, emissions and greenhouse gasses, that the sun’s rays will be much more intense than they are now. This will lead to the environment being much brighter than we could imagine now. Somewhere along our evolutionary path, according to some scientists, we could potential evolve larger eyes (although how larger eyes would help with brighter sunlight is beyond me). These same scientists also claim that we will eventually end up evolving into a species with much larger heads (will we finally get smarter as a species? I hope so!) Picture a humanoid with a large head and eyes.. remind you of anything? The typical “grey” aliens, perhaps?
Do I believe that aliens are nothing more than time-travelling humans? Not necessarily. Not any more than I believe that they are from another planet “somewhere out there.” That’s not to say I don’t believe in aliens. I’m on the fence, I guess. I believe they could be out there. I believe they could be humans from the future. I believe they could be angels, or any other host of possible answers. The fact is, I don’t know. And I don’t really need to know. Unless an alien force suddenly shows up and attacks earth, I don’t think the idea affects my life in any way whatsoever.
What do you believe? Make sure and let me know in the comments.
